Last Saturday Fairfield Writers Group was treated to a writing workshop at the Fairfield Library. The workshop was presented by Brisbane author Bill Youat-Pine author of "The Groundsman" and "The Militia Man's Tale". It was excellent! We all learnt things to improve our writing and had a great day as well.



 

 

WRITING EXERCISE FOR NOVEMBER 2011

WORKSHOP

This month we are repeating the same workshop we did in October 2011 but with a twist!

This time what ever 3/4  items you got last time you will pass them over to someone else.

Let's see what other story will come out of the same items.

Just to remind you, below is the the info on last months workshop.

Please bring three items to the meeting (preferably small items that can be carried in a shopping bag or handbag).

These will be pooled and redistributed randomly, so that each participant ends up with three different items. These items must be contained in and play a significant role in a story that you will write in the first hour of the meeting, and be critiqued in the second hour.

Eg. Let's say you end up with a picture of a woman, a a red scarf, a pair of handcuffs...then you might write a story in which the woman in the picture is a high class prostitute....she gets a call from a customer called Mr B.....he wants something special....that involves handcuffs and a red scarf....well you get the picture. Of course if you get something like a mobile phone, a comb, and a a pencil.,..it might be a lot of difficult to write a story in an hour using those items

Don't forget to bring pen and paper!

What an excellent turn-up we had for our last meeting of the year. Our writing workshop morning was a success and as always was fun. A lot of interesting stories were read out and hopefully some of them will be starters for longer pieces throughout the year.

Due to popular demand, QWC will be running more classes in the Year of the Writer series in the latter half of 2010!

Express Year of the Novel with Kim Wilkins

Challenge yourself to complete the ultimate writing journey in Express Year of the Novel. This six-month intensive masterclass will push you to finish your novel, overcome writing blocks and, most importantly, to keep writing. Your tutor will provide feedback on 10 pages, and individual masterclass sessions focus on elements of the novel. QWC will set up an online group for your class so you can keep in touch, share milestones and give encouragement between classes.

Year of the Edit with Kim Wilkins
Any author will tell you the first draft is never the last. Novel writing is a long process, and revising and editing is often the biggest challenge writers face. Year of the Edit will help you explore the possibilities in your completed draft. Over five progressive masterclasses you will develop skills in structural editing, expression, grammar, style and group critique. Your peers will provide critique during the series and your tutor will assist in outlining the strengths and potential in your submitted work.

Free Writing Exercise: Word prompt - hat


She had bought the hat on a whim.

It was not the sort of hat that she would normally have chosen but the price was right. It was made of coarse linen in a floral pattern and drooped, she hoped seductively, over one eye.

With luck, she thought, it would be good for business. Certainly it would stand out. It was a hat, she believed, that would be seen from afar. It would be a like a beacon, and perhaps in time become her trademark. “The Woman in the Floral Hat” had a certain ring to it.

She loosened the top button of her blouse, checked that the seams of her fishnets were straight beneath her short black skirt and walked out, hat on head, to stand at the street corner.

If business picked up, she thought, I might get a second hat just like the first.
